  1. What browsers are recommended for use with this site?

The Mozilla Firefox browser is recommended for PC usage and the Safari browser is recommended for use on Mac's. The majority of testing has been conducted with these browsers.
  2. What issues will I encounter if I use other browsers?

Based on testing to date, the use of the Opera, Safari or Chrome browsers on a PC should not provide serious problems. Only minor issues with rendering of some pages can be expected with these applications. The most significant issue occurs on the Safari and Chrome browsers where the census page index shown on each census page will bleed over into the census table on census summaries with a large number of pages. The data is still readable through the page index, but it does make the data more difficult to read.

Use of the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser (versions 6 & 7) may result in the census tables not being displayed properly at this time. The IE browsers will not display borders around an empty cell in a table, resulting in a irregular display of the table and creating difficulty in reading the table info.

The newly released IE8 browser displays the borders around empty cells correctly, but there is still an issue with displaying "joined cells", cells that span across multiple columns of the table. This feature is used for displaying the County, City/town information, as well as for displaying the genealogical lineage of the head of household (and any other adult males), where known. In the IE browsers, the information will not "spread" across the cells, but word wraps in the single original cell, making for very long, multi-line entries. Further testing is underway to determine if this issue can be corrected in IE8.

Testing on Macs has been limited to Safari, so issues with any other browsers on that platform are not known.
