Nelda Hollingsworth

Funeral services will be 10:30 am on Friday, December 30, 2016 at the First Christian Church in Perry with Pastor Andrea Brownlee officiating. Musician will be Patti (Hayes) Boyle. Selected songs are The Lord’s Prayer, How Great Thou Art and I Will Remember You. Visitation will be held from 9:30 am until service time. Pallbearers are Jana Herbert, Brian Hollingsworth, Kent Turner, Derry Pitsenbarger, Doyce Pitsenbarger, Karla Rogen, Jerry Gortmaker, Jim Gortmaker, Susan Blazer and Don Stracke. Burial will be in Violet Hill Cemetery.

Nelda Hollingsworth went home to be with her heavenly father and other family members when she passed away at the Rowley Masonic Home in Perry on Tuesday, December 27, 2016.

Nelda Lenore Schwab, daughter of Clifford and Merle (Jones) Schwab was born on the family farm in Lincoln Twp., Dallas Co., Iowa on February 4, 1920. She grew up on this same farm and attended Lincoln #6 Country School through the eighth grade. She graduated from Redfield High School with her older sister, LaVon, in 1936..

She married Merle Dean “Jack” Hollingsworth on December 21, 1941 at the Christian Church in Perry. They were married on the 25th Wedding Anniversary of Nelda’s parents and also the wedding anniversary of her Schwab great grandparents. Two sons were born in this union, Rick Gene in 1947 and Dennis Dean in 1951. While Jack served his country in the Pacific Theatre during World War II, Nelda helped her father-in-law, Jim Hollingsworth, in running the family farm. At the time, this was featured as an article in the Perry Daily Chief.

Nelda started working as an aid at the Dallas County Hospital in Perry from the mid 1960’s through the mid 1980’s. She eventually worked her way up to being a certified surgical assistant, which job she held for many years before her retirement. In later years, she enjoyed getting together with other retirees of the hospital. She was a member of the Dallas County Hospital Auxiliary. Nelda was a member of the First Christian Church, serving as a trustee and an active CWF member. She was very dedicated to chair as funeral meal coordinator, for many years.

Nelda was preceded in death by her parents, husband on July 23, 1979, son Rick in 2001 and her sister LaVon (Pitsenbarger) Gortmaker in 2003.

Survivors include her son, Dennis Hollingsworth of Iowa City, IA; daughter-in-law, Elaine (Robbins) Hollingsworth of Liberty, MO, and two grandchildren, Jana Elizabeth (David) Herbert of Liberty, MO and Brian James Hollingsworth of Olathe, KS, and three great-grandchildren, Jordan Elaine, Sidney Elizabeth, and Trenton Rae. She’s also survived by two sisters, Jean Turner of Redfield and June Pitsenbarger of Linden, plus several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.
